Spiritual Awakening and Surrender: Cristine Hull on Ego, Healing and Reinvention

Spiritual Awakening and Surrender: Cristine Hull on Ego, Healing and Reinvention

There comes a point in personal growth when becoming more is no longer the answer.

Sometimes the work is subtraction.

An identity has to be released. A belief has to be questioned. A strategy that once worked has to be abandoned. An old definition of success has to fall apart.

And sometimes we have to admit that the version of ourselves we worked so hard to build may no longer be the person we are being called to become.

That tension sits at the heart of our conversation with Cristine Hull on Mirror Talk: Soulful Conversations.

Cristine is a writer, speaker, teacher and Doctor of Natural Medicine whose professional journey has taken her through substance-abuse counselling, school psychology and clinical mental health. Her work today reflects an integrative interest in psychology, spirituality, meditation, consciousness and human transformation.

But the deeper story is not about her credentials.

It is about what she has been willing to let go.

When the Search for Something More Becomes Destructive

Cristine’s story of transformation reaches back to her early adulthood.

At twenty, she describes moving from cocaine addiction into Christian faith through a profound personal experience.

Decades later, she can look back differently at the young woman she once was.

That raises a question that extends far beyond addiction:

What are we actually searching for when we reach desperately for something outside ourselves?

Sometimes the behaviour on the surface is only part of the story.

Behind it may exist loneliness, pain, disconnection, fear, a desire to escape or a longing for meaning.

For Cristine, faith offered another framework through which to understand herself and her life.

But her spiritual journey did not end there.

When Faith Meets the Unknown

At forty-five, while experiencing severe anxiety, Cristine encountered a former Buddhist monk.

The experience challenged some of the boundaries through which she had understood spirituality.

And that presents an uncomfortable but important question:

Can we remain deeply rooted in what we believe while still being willing to encounter something we do not yet understand?

There is a difference between openness and unquestioning acceptance.

That distinction matters.

Spirituality, meditation and complementary approaches to wellbeing can be deeply meaningful to people. At the same time, people experiencing pain can also be vulnerable to exaggerated promises, unsupported claims or practitioners presenting certainty where uncertainty actually exists.

Our conversation therefore moves into something essential: discernment.

Being open does not require abandoning critical thinking.

And being discerning does not require becoming closed.

Sometimes maturity means learning to hold both.

The Ego Does Not Disappear Because We Become Spiritual

One of Cristine’s central areas of exploration is what she calls ego-management.

It is tempting to imagine ego as obvious arrogance or selfishness.

But ego can be subtler than that.

It can appear as the need to be right.

The need to have the answer.

The need to be recognised as healed, enlightened or spiritually advanced.

The need for life to follow our plans.

Even our attempts at becoming better people can quietly become another identity we feel compelled to defend.

Cristine’s journey has therefore required something more demanding than simply learning new ideas.

It has required repeatedly questioning herself.

And perhaps that is one of the more uncomfortable aspects of genuine personal development: eventually, the person doing the healing also has to become willing to examine the identity of being “the healed person.”

When Reinvention Requires Loss

Over several years, Cristine changed major parts of her life: her marriage, her understanding of family, her home, her name, her career and the way she wanted to show up in the world.

From the outside, reinvention is often romanticised.

We celebrate the new beginning.

We rarely talk enough about the grief.

Because becoming someone new can mean saying goodbye to someone familiar.

It may involve disappointing people.

Losing certainty.

Admitting that previous decisions no longer fit.

Starting again when we thought we were already supposed to have arrived.

That is why one of the central questions from our conversation matters so much:

Can I become who I feel called to become while continuing to protect who I used to be?

Sometimes the answer is no.

What If Success Requires Less Control?

Cristine describes 2026 as becoming one of her most successful years.

What makes that statement interesting is her explanation.

Not more control.

Not more force.

Not an increasingly complicated strategy.

Surrender.

Surrender is easily misunderstood.

It does not necessarily mean passivity, irresponsibility or refusing to act.

In this conversation, it points toward releasing the obsession with controlling every outcome.

There are moments when disciplined action is necessary.

There are also moments when continuing to force something that is clearly no longer working becomes its own form of resistance.

Wisdom may lie in knowing the difference.

What Does Wholeness Actually Look Like?

Cristine speaks about development across several dimensions of life: physical, psychological, spiritual, relational and financial.

That perspective exposes another trap within self-development.

We often keep improving what we are already good at.

The successful professional works more.

The spiritually inclined person consumes more spiritual teaching.

The fitness enthusiast trains harder.

The intellectual reads another book.

Meanwhile, another dimension of life may quietly be deteriorating.

Wholeness asks a different question:

Where is my life currently asking for my attention?

Not where do I feel most competent?

Not what is easiest to improve?

Where is the invitation?

A Faith-Filled Fear Away

One phrase from Cristine stayed with us:

“Their freedom is just a faith-filled fear away.”

Most significant decisions do not arrive with guarantees.

Leaving an unhealthy identity does not automatically reveal the new one.

Questioning a long-held belief does not immediately replace it with certainty.

Changing careers does not guarantee success.

Setting a boundary does not guarantee somebody will understand it.

Surrender does not mean we suddenly know what happens next.

Sometimes we simply see enough of the next step to take it.

And perhaps that is what courage looks like in ordinary life.

Not fearlessness.

Not complete certainty.

Just enough trust to move.

Beyond the Boxes

Cristine Hull’s story reminds us that evolution does not always look like adding another achievement.

Sometimes growth looks like relinquishing an identity.

Questioning a system.

Admitting that an approach no longer works.

Becoming a beginner again.

Sitting quietly.

Changing direction.

And surrendering the demand to know exactly what happens next.

Maybe wholeness is not the moment when every area of life becomes perfect.

Maybe it is our growing capacity to meet every part of ourselves—body, mind, spirit, relationships, work, money, fear, faith and uncertainty—with greater awareness.

Because some of the boxes that once protected us can eventually become the walls we are being invited to walk beyond.

What are you still holding onto simply because it once made you feel safe?
