What happens when we replace assumptions with curiosity? Author Richard G. Riccardi joins Mirror Talk to share lessons from visiting 33 places of worship and discovering the power of genuine human connection.

What If the People We Consider Different Are the Ones Who Teach Us Where We Belong?

We live in a world where it has become remarkably easy to form opinions about people we have never met.

We categorise one another by religion, culture, race, politics, economic status and beliefs. Sometimes, these distinctions become walls that prevent us from recognising the humanity on the other side.

But what happens when we choose to walk through the door instead?

In this episode of Mirror Talk: Soulful Conversations, host Tobi Ojekunle sits down with writer, mentor, entrepreneur and author Richard G. Riccardi to explore faith, diversity, forgiveness, community and the transformative power of approaching life with an open heart and mind.

Richard’s remarkable journey began with an unexpected personal experiment: visiting 33 different places of worship in one year.

That decision would eventually inspire his book, The Wandering Worshipper, and deepen his understanding of something many of us spend our lives searching for: a genuine sense of belonging.

From an Uninspired Churchgoer to the Wandering Worshipper

Richard describes his earlier spiritual life as that of an irregular and uninspired churchgoer.

Rather than simply accepting this disconnection, he decided to do something different.

He began exploring places of worship that represented a variety of traditions, denominations and communities.

Each visit offered an opportunity to encounter unfamiliar practices, meet new people and reconsider assumptions.

Throughout the journey, Richard discovered that meaningful spiritual experiences could emerge from unexpected encounters.

He found warmth and hospitality in communities where he might otherwise have felt like an outsider. He also began recognising common human values across differences in religious expression.

His experience raises a question worth asking ourselves:

How many of our beliefs about other people are based on genuine encounters, and how many are inherited assumptions?

When “They” Become “We”: Finding Humanity Beyond Our Differences

One of the most meaningful themes of Richard’s journey is the transformation of how we see others.

From a distance, it is easy to divide the world into familiar and unfamiliar groups.

But genuine encounters make those divisions more complicated.

We begin to recognise the human experiences beneath our different identities: the desire for acceptance, the need for connection, the comfort of being understood and the hope of finding somewhere to belong.

Richard’s experiences invite us to distinguish between agreeing with someone and treating that person with dignity.

We do not have to share every conviction to recognise shared humanity.

Perhaps the first step toward a more compassionate society is not convincing everyone to think alike, but becoming more willing to listen to one another.

The Importance of Community and a Place to Belong

Finding a community is not always the same as experiencing belonging.

We can attend gatherings, participate in activities and surround ourselves with others while still feeling emotionally disconnected.

Genuine belonging involves more than physical presence.

It develops through relationships, participation, mutual care and the experience of being welcomed as a person.

Richard’s exploration of different faith communities highlights the importance of human connection in spiritual life.

It also offers a valuable reminder to anyone who feels isolated: meaningful community may be closer than we imagine, but discovering it can require stepping beyond what feels familiar.

The question is not simply, “Where can I go?”

It is also, “Where can I participate, contribute, connect and grow?”

Approaching Life With an Open Heart and Mind

One of Richard’s most meaningful invitations is simple:

“Approach life with an open heart and mind, anticipate goodness.”

This perspective challenges the tendency to enter unfamiliar situations expecting disappointment, rejection or conflict.

Anticipating goodness does not mean ignoring difficult realities or pretending everyone has good intentions.

It means remaining receptive to the possibility that meaningful experiences and genuine connections can emerge where we least expect them.

It also means allowing our encounters to challenge us.

Open-mindedness is not necessarily the absence of conviction. It can be the willingness to examine our convictions with humility.

When curiosity becomes part of how we live, growth remains possible.

Forgiveness, Self-Compassion and the Courage to Keep Growing

Beyond the journey through different places of worship, Richard and Tobi also explore personal development and our relationship with ourselves.

How do we make peace with the person we used to be?

How do we acknowledge our mistakes without allowing them to define our future?

And how do we pursue improvement without becoming trapped in perpetual dissatisfaction?

Richard reflects on forgiveness, self-compassion and the importance of recognising personal growth.

He also discusses the need to develop stronger boundaries.

As he observes:

“I need to continue to develop the ability to say no.”

It is a valuable reminder that personal development involves both openness and discernment.

Sometimes growing means welcoming new experiences. Other times it means recognising our limitations, protecting our priorities and accepting that we cannot do everything.

What Does a Soulful Life Really Require?

Richard’s professional background includes work as an attorney, CPA, entrepreneur, investor and mentor.

Yet the conversation reaches beyond professional accomplishment.

Achievement can provide security, opportunity and fulfilment, but it cannot answer every question about purpose, identity and connection.

The deeper work of life often involves examining whom we are becoming, how we treat others and what kind of presence we bring into the world.

Through his writing and 52 Steps Forward, Richard encourages readers to reflect thoughtfully, question familiar assumptions and pursue meaningful growth.

His story invites us to consider not only what we have accomplished, but what our experiences are teaching us about ourselves and other people.

Three Questions Worth Taking Into Your Own Life

As you listen to this conversation, consider:

  1. Whom have I judged without taking the time to know them?
  2. Where in my life am I allowing fear or familiarity to prevent meaningful connection?
  3. What belief, habit or expectation might I need to reconsider to keep growing?

You do not need to visit 33 places of worship to begin answering these questions.

Sometimes transformation begins with one conversation, one unfamiliar invitation or one decision to see another person differently.
