From Pain to Purpose: Red Light Therapy, Resilience & Recovery with John Graham Harper

Sometimes innovation does not begin with an idea.

It begins with a problem you desperately need to solve.

For John Graham Harper, founder and CEO of Lumaflex, that problem was deeply personal. As a competitive athlete dealing with injuries and the realities of physical recovery, he began searching for ways to help his body heal and perform.

That search introduced him to red light therapy.

What began as part of his own recovery eventually became something much bigger: a mission to rethink how people could access light-based recovery technology wherever life took them.

On this episode of Mirror Talk: Soulful Conversations, John joins Tobi for a conversation about far more than building a wellness company. It is a story about resilience, rejection, personal transformation, integrity and what can happen when we allow difficult experiences to become raw material for something meaningful.

When Pain Becomes an Invitation

Injury can be devastating for an athlete.

The body that once felt dependable suddenly imposes limitations. Training changes. Progress slows. Identity can even begin to shift.

John’s experience forced him to confront those realities.

But it also made him curious.

Rather than simply asking how quickly he could return to where he had been, he began exploring new approaches to recovery. That curiosity eventually led him to photobiomodulation, commonly known as red light therapy.

The technology uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to interact with biological processes in the body. Research continues to investigate its applications across areas including pain, tissue recovery and exercise recovery.

For John, however, discovering the technology presented another question:

How could it become easier to use in everyday life?

That question helped give birth to Lumaflex.

Turning Recovery Into Innovation

Traditional red light therapy systems have often been associated with large panels, clinics or fixed treatment environments.

John saw an opportunity to make the technology more portable.

Lumaflex developed flexible wearable devices that could bring targeted red and near-infrared light directly to different areas of the body. The idea was to create something capable of fitting into the lives of athletes, professionals and everyday users rather than requiring life to revolve around the equipment.

That approach attracted significant attention.

The Lumaflex Body Pro was named one of TIME Magazine’s Best Inventions of 2023, placing John’s original response to his own injuries on a much larger global stage.

But recognition did not erase the struggle required to get there.

The Part of Entrepreneurship Awards Don’t Show

Successful companies are often introduced through milestones.

Awards. Growth. Partnerships. Recognition.

What those summaries rarely capture are the rejected ideas, uncertainty, mistakes and personal battles that came before them.

John speaks openly in our conversation about rejection and the resilience required to continue moving forward when things do not work.

That lesson extends far beyond entrepreneurship.

Almost every meaningful path contains seasons when the evidence seems to suggest that we should stop. The opportunity may not arrive. The person may say no. The body may fail us. The plan may collapse.

Resilience is not pretending those experiences do not hurt.

It is learning how to respond to them without allowing them to determine the rest of the story.

Gratitude as a Way Back to Yourself

One of the more personal parts of our conversation explores gratitude and self-reflection.

When life becomes difficult, our minds can become dominated by what is missing, broken or uncertain.

Gratitude does not require denying those realities.

Instead, it can interrupt the tendency to reduce an entire life to its most painful chapter.

For John, looking inward has been an important part of both personal and professional growth.

That willingness to examine ourselves may be one of the least glamorous — and most necessary — parts of transformation.

Because building a better company without building a more grounded person can eventually create a different kind of problem.

What Does the Science Say About Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy belongs to a broader field known as photobiomodulation.

Researchers have studied how red and near-infrared wavelengths interact with cellular systems, including proposed effects involving mitochondrial activity and cellular signalling.

There is scientific evidence supporting some applications of photobiomodulation, including research into pain and exercise recovery. At the same time, results can vary substantially depending on wavelength, dose, treatment protocol, device and medical condition.

That distinction matters.

Wellness innovation is most valuable when curiosity and enthusiasm remain connected to evidence.

And as John explains during our conversation, education is an important part of helping people understand not simply that a technology exists, but when and how it may be used responsibly.

Integrity Behind Innovation

Technology may be what customers first see.

Values determine what survives.

John identifies integrity, resilience and empowerment as principles central to the way he wants to build.

Integrity becomes particularly important in wellness because companies are dealing with something deeply personal: people’s hope that they can feel better.

That creates a responsibility not merely to sell products but to communicate clearly, build carefully and earn trust.

The same philosophy applies to leadership.

A founder cannot build everything alone. Sustainable growth requires finding capable people, trusting them and allowing them to take ownership.

Empowering others can therefore become both a business strategy and a human one.

Recovery Is Bigger Than One Technology

Perhaps one of the most important ideas from this conversation is that wellness cannot be reduced to one device, treatment or routine.

Technology can support us.

But sustainable health also asks questions about sleep, movement, nutrition, stress, relationships, mental well-being and the way we live every ordinary day.

Consistency usually matters more than intensity.

And recovery itself should not be viewed as weakness or lost productivity. Whether we are athletes, entrepreneurs, parents, creators or professionals, our ability to keep moving forward is inseparable from our ability to recover.

From Personal Healing to Legacy

John’s story began with his own body.

But his ambition now extends beyond his personal recovery.

Through Lumaflex, he wants to make light-based therapy increasingly accessible while continuing to develop the technology and the education surrounding it.

That evolution captures one of the central ideas behind this episode of Mirror Talk:

Sometimes the thing we once wished had never happened becomes the experience that equips us to serve someone else.

Pain can become curiosity.

Curiosity can become innovation.

Innovation can become service.

And eventually, what began as an attempt to heal ourselves can become part of the legacy we leave behind.
