The Journey to Financial Independence
Brighton Gbarazia, a mortgage broker and founder of Wealth Marathon, shares his journey towards achieving financial independence by the age of 40.
Growing up watching his parents struggle with money, Brighton developed a strong desire to learn more about money and how it works.
He realized that the financial system is not designed to prioritize the best interests of individuals, but rather to generate fees and profits for financial institutions.
This led him to pursue real estate as a means to achieve financial freedom. Brighton created Wealth Marathon as a platform to educate others about money and provide them with the knowledge and tools to reach their financial goals.
SOUND BITES
“The real freedom that you get in life, in anything you do, is really comes down to you being able to do what you want, when you want.”
“If we all educate ourselves, increase our knowledge a little bit more, we therefore make it harder for each of us to take advantage of each other.”
“A home is like a forced savings plan for homeowners. They have a mortgage and every month they are required to put money away into that home.”
“Whenever you hear people online talk about retirement, what do they have the money in? The stock market, right?”
“So psychologically, it doesn’t feel good when you’re a renter because it feels like almost like society treats you as a second class citizen, but you just need to understand the math.”
“You can’t just as a renter, you can’t just say, Oh, I’m better off. You need to be putting away something because if your friend owns that home, even though it’s more expensive in 30 years, they’re going to have a nest egg and you won’t have anything.”
In this conversation, Brighton Gbarazia provides insights and advice on the decision to rent or buy a home, as well as tips for approaching banks for mortgages.
He emphasizes the importance of understanding the math and considering factors such as job stability and credit when making the decision.
Brighton also discusses the emotional aspect of home ownership and cautions against making decisions based solely on societal expectations. For those interested in real estate investment, he advises focusing on the numbers and finding properties that can generate income.
He suggests considering satellite cities and building multiple units on a single lot for higher returns.
